Though the Giants already have five-time All-Star catcher Buster Posey, they couldn’t resist Bart, who recorded a slash line of .359/.471/.632 with 16 home runs and 38 RBIs in 57 games.

A native Georgian like Posey, the 21-year-old Bart was drafted in the 27th round by Tampa Bay (808th overall) in 2015, but elected to enroll at Georgia Tech.

Bart, a junior, won the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Player of the Year award, besides being named first-team All-America and a semifinalist for two national player of the year awards. He’s also a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, emblematic of the season’s top collegiate catcher. Posey won that award before the Giants drafted him fifth overall in 2008.

Bart eclipsed right-hander Kevin Brown as Georgia Tech’s highest Draft pick. Brown went fourth overall to the Texas Rangers in 1986. Bart also is the Giants’ first No. 2 overall selection in the Draft since they plucked first baseman Will Clark from Mississippi State in 1985.
