LIVE: Sevilla vs Barcelona

Ernesto Valverde’s formation features plenty of both tenured statesmen and new signings. Marc-Andre ter Stegen is preferred to Cillessen in goal, with Alba, Lenglet, Pique and Semedo his defensive line. Rafinha and Dembele will play the flanks as Arthur and Sergio Busquets maintain the passing possession-style football typical of Barcelona from the centre. In attack, it’s the usual pair of Messi and Suarez who will no doubt strike fear in the Sevilla defence.

Pablo Machin opts for three centre-backs in front of Vaclik with Mercado and Gomez stationed on opposite sides of Kjaer. Mesa and Banega will patrol the centre of the park, with Jesus Navas and Escudero providing width on the right and left. Up front, Vazquez and Sarabia are chosen to supply Muriel with opportunities to score.

Barcelona substitutes: Jasper Cillessen, Samuel Umtiti, Juan Miranda, Ivan Rakitic, Philippe Coutinho, Arturo Vidal, Munir El Haddadi.

Barcelona Starting XI (4-4-2): Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Jordi Alba, Clement Lenglet, Gerard Pique, Nelson Semedo; Rafinha, Arthur, Sergio Busquets, Ousmane Dembele; Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez.

Sevilla substitutes: Juan Soriano, Ibrahim Amadou, Daniel Carrico, Nolito, Aleix Vidal, Wissam Ben Yedder, Andre Silva.

Sevilla Starting XI (3-4-2-1): Tomas Vaclik; Sergi Gomez, Simon Kjaer, Gabriel Mercado; Sergio Escudero, Ever Banega, Roque Mesa, Jesus Navas; Pablo Sarabia, Franco Vazquez; Luis Muriel.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off at the Grand Stade de Tangier, it’s about time we took a look at how the two sides will line up! Let’s start with Sevilla!

Sevilla enter today’s fixture having only been Super Cup champions once in three tries – with their lone victory coming in the form of an upset, beating Real Madrid 6-3 on aggregate in 2007. Last years’ seventh-placed side will be looking to arrest a losing streak against Barcelona in this competition – with the Catalan side handing Sevilla both of their losses – 2010 and 2016.

It should come as no surprise that Barcelona are the competition’s most successful side, winning 12 out of the 22 finals they have been a part of – with last year’s loss to Real Madrid their most recent appearance. Lionel Messi also holds the record of most goals in the Super Cup, scoring 13 times in 17 appearances.

A decision taken by the Spanish Football Federation sees this year’s event will be unlike any other – despite having many previous iterations. President Luis Rubiales has taken the bold decision to host the competition outside of the nation in a one-legged affair, as opposed to the traditional two-legged home-and-home format.

The 32nd annual Spanish Super Cup – in its modern form and nomenclature – will be contested between Barcelona and Sevilla in Tangier, Morocco! Barca were successful in their campaign for domestic honours last year, laying claim to both the LaLiga title and the Copa del Rey which ensured their entry into this season’s showpiece final. Their opposition today – Sevilla – take part as runners-up in the Spanish Cup; a fixture they will no doubt be looking to forget as Messi and company thrashed the Andalusian side 5-0 in the one-sided final.

Good evening and welcome to our LIVE commentary of the Spanish Super Cup between Sevilla and Barcelona – from the Grand Stade de Tangier in Tangier, Morocco!
